Prof. Dr. Michael Kühn is the Head of the Hydrogeology section at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. At the same time, he is Professor of Hydrogeology at the University of Potsdam. His research group focuses on the dynamic interactions between shallow and deep groundwater systems and their quantitative description using computer-assisted process simulations. Their interests include the evaluation of the influence of the utilization of georesources in deep groundwater systems (e.g. CO₂ storage in saline aquifers, shale gas) with regard to the risk to fresh water resources in shallow areas. Therefore a key aspect is the assessment and modeling of the interactions between shallow and deep groundwater systems. The general focus is placed on understanding and monitoring processes and the assessment of risks based on fully coupled numerical simulations.
